Leadership Washington program kicks off 2024-25 year with city history day

WASHINGTON — Leadership Washington, the nine-month leadership development program organized by the Washington Chamber of Commerce, began its 2024-2025 session on Wednesday, Sept. 11, with a class of 28 participants. The opening day's theme was City History Day, and participants were treated to an immersive experience with renowned local historian Michael Zahs.

The day kicked off at 8:30 a.m. at the historic Blair House, where the class was introduced to the program through a series of orientation activities. Participants then received a guided tour of the Blair House, learning about its historical significance before heading to Elm Grove Cemetery for a lesson in local history, led by Zahs.

Midday, the group gathered at Sunset Park for a lunch prepared by Leadership Washington alum and Washington Police Chief Jim Lester. The Leadership Washington Planning Committee welcomed the new class, and Washington Chamber of Commerce Director Michelle Redlinger delivered remarks, offering encouragement for the months ahead.

In the afternoon, the class continued its historical journey with a visit to the Alexander Young Log House, where Dorothy Miller shared insights into the early days of Washington County. Back downtown, Mr. Zahs led an exploration of the State Theatre and the history of film in Washington County. The day concluded with a tour of the F-Troop Military Museum, guided by Gene Ted Drain and Gene Fields, followed by one final stop at the Conger House for another enlightening history lesson from Zahs.
