WASHINGTON - With leaves quickly changing colors and falling, Washington will start the leaf vac program on Monday.
Leaf pickup will begin on Oct. 19 and continue until Nov. 25. The leaves are a week ahead of schedule, and the team may start picking up piles on Thursday, said Washington maintenance and construction Superintendent JJ Bell.
Bell said they pick up around 200 loads of leaves a year.
Residents can place leaves in the strip between the sidewalk and the street. Bell asks residents to avoid putting the leaves in the streets or near gutters as it could cause drainage issues.
The crew will start in the northwest quadrant of the city and move counter clockwise. Depending on the quantity of piles, some residents may have to wait two or three weeks before their leaves are picked up.
Residents can also haul leaves, tree trimmings or any other grown organic matter to the Waste Water Treatment Plan and Yard Waste Center.
It is located at 1065 W Buchanan St. and is open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
For the fall, hours will be extended to be open on Saturday mornings, 7 to 10 a.m. Oct. 17 through Nov. 21.
