WASHINGTON - Second-grade students at Lincoln Elementary in Washington are giving back to the community through a food drive.
Liz Goodwin and Rebecca Collins' second-grade students are doing a monthlong food drive for the school food pantry. Goodwin said the students and parents wanted a way to give to those in need.
The food drive started Dec. 1. Each day, Goodwin said there is a different item the kids can donate.
On Dec. 7 it was canned fruit, on Dec. 14 it will be a box of pasta.
'The kids can help pick something out at the store,” Goodwin said.
She said the kids have been enjoying having set items each day. Every day they are asking what the next item is going to be, Goodwin said. While student can donate each day, she said the families donate what they are able to.
'Some don't have one item but will bring two boxes of the next item,” Goodwin said.
As of Wednesday, 174 items were collected.
Goodwin said it is always great to give back to the community and reach kids locally.
On Dec. 22, the items will be delivered to the high school food pantry. The pantry is available to be used by students and community members. Individuals can sign up for a time to visit the pantry on the school's website.
If community members would like to donate, the school accepts donations during school hours or they can contact Goodwin at egoodwin@washington.k12.ia.us.
