Roads will be packed with the cars and ovens will be filled with pies this weekend as Americans celebrate Mother?s Day. Brighton resident Danielle Glaspie said she is planning to get together with her mother, who lives in Wellman. Glaspie said she may either take her mother out for lunch or have a meal at her house. Glaspie said that she sees her mother on a regular basis.
?I try to see my mother at least once a week,? said Glaspie. ?She?s in a care facility, so I let her know that she is not forgotten and that I?m still here for her. I try to spend as much time with her as I can because I know she isn?t going to be here forever.?
Glaspie said that her mother raised her with good values that she tries to pass on to her own children.
?I tell her as often as I can that I love her, and I let her know that she is very important to me,? said Glaspie. ?I appreciate everything she has done and given up for me.?
Joy Neff is a resident of Washington who plans to visit her mother on Sunday in a care center in Bloomfield, which is south of Ottumwa. She also has plans for Saturday, when she will attend a barbecue at her son?s house in Iowa City.
Neff said that she normally sees her mother about once every six weeks, but since her mother has moved to a care center she sees her nearly once a week.
?What I like about my mother is that she was always there for us,? said Neff. ?She enjoyed playing with and taking care of the grandkids and being involved in all their activities.?
Neff said that she and her family have a family meal on Mother?s Day in a family member?s home.
?We don?t normally go out to eat on Mother?s Day because it?s hard to find a place that isn?t busy,? said Neff.
Patty Roe will also head to the Bloomfield area to see her parents this weekend. She said she is still working out the particulars of what to do Sunday, but she said she may eat at a restaurant in the evening.
?We?ll probably eat at a restaurant at suppertime Sunday, because most other people will eat together at lunchtime,? said Roe. ?Normally, we would go to one of our homes and each one of us would contribute a food item. This hasn?t been confirmed yet, but it was my idea for us to go out this time. If not, we?ll meet at one house or another and everyone will chip in.?
