Actias luna), a very strong flier attracted to lights. The pale green wingspan measures 3 to 4 inches, with a transparent eyespot on each wing and a pinkish outer margin. The hind wings have long curving tails. They are not often seen due to their nighttime activities. Lunas mate after midnight and begin laying their eggs on host plants by evening. The large green caterpillars, which are hatched in about a week, are solitary feeders on a variety of trees including white birch, persimmon, sweet gum, hickory, walnut and sumac.
