FAIRFIELD – For the third year in a row, Maasdam Barns hosted a female troupe of horseback riders celebrating the Mexican equestrian tradition of “Charrería.”
The group, Escaramuza Quetzalli based in Des Moines, performed a show at the barns on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 20, then invited the public to ride their horses. Tony Webb, chair of the Maasdam Barns Historic Preservation Committee, said the event was “fantastic.”
“They are so accommodating to us as we strive to create a yearly event that showcases their dedication to Mexican culture and the sportsmanship of Charreria,” Webb said. “This was our third year of hosting at the Maasdam Barns and was the largest yet as far as attendance. We are fortunate to have a venue that can accommodate this group, and we really appreciate our sponsors that make this event possible.”
A grant from Fairfield’s Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) and the Iowa Horse Council made the event possible, plus donations from Cranston Funeral Home and support from Community First Credit Union. Together, these monies allowed Maasdam Barns to offer this as a free event.
“Having this event in the afternoon following the Kiwanis Kids’ Day Parade came together this year and brought many people out to enjoy our community’s hospitality,” Webb said. “Plans are underway for next year!”
