The Fairfield Water Department responded to a main break Wednesday afternoon on West Jefferson Avenue between Third and Fourth streets. Water filled the street and created a virtual ice rink on West Jefferson. Water superintendent Carl Chandler said the crew was on scene for four to five hours while it dug a hole in the street to get down to the leaky main. Chandler said it was so cold outside members of the crew volunteered to work in the hole because it was so much warmer underground. ?They?re standing in 50-degree water when they?re in the hole,? he said. Chandler said he doesn?t know for sure what caused the main break, but said it was probably due to contractions in the soil brought on by cold temperatures.
