Main Street Masters miniature golf event returning to Washington May 3
Apr. 30, 2019 11:26 am
Back by popular demand, the Main Street Masters miniature golf event will return for its second year of fun on Friday, May 3, from 5:30-8 p.m.
Main Street Washington Executive Director Sarah Grunewaldt said for its inaugural year, the event had just over 100 golfers and 17 businesses sponsoring a golf hole. This year, there will be 24 stops and she is hoping to double the number of golfers from the previous year.
The event was the idea of local businesses owner Tim Elliot, who saw something similar in another community. After joining the Main Street Washington board, he, along with fellow board member Steve Donnolly, decided to implement the event.
'The two of those guys really took it on and ran with it last year and had a ton of fun putting it together, and their joy is contagious,” she said. 'They are just like kids in a candy store putting it together.”
The fun continued into the event as local businesses created and decorated golf holes for guests to play on. Businesses in the downtown sector will be able to have their station in front of their business and those without a store front on the square will be given a place to create a continuous playing space for guests.
Those participating are encouraged to bring their own golf balls and putters. The event is open to the public with a fee for guests 9 and over.
'Last year we had golfers from 2 to 82,” she said. 'It's miniature golf, so if you can hold a putter you can probably play.”
Grunewaldt said she is looking forward to hosting the event again because she feels it's a family-friendly event that can service multiple groups of people.
'Last year it was an organic event. It was something someone saw and they thought it would be fun and it really turned into this event that made our businesses happy and it made our community happy,” she said. 'It became this really great social event for the community.”
The positive feedback from last year has translated into positive energy and excitement this year. Grunewaldt said the event is a great way to support downtown with a fun atmosphere to be enjoyed by people of all ages.
'I'm excited to see what comes out of it and I think people should get excited about seeing the creativity that comes out of these businesses,” she said.
