A 26-year-old man was charged with carrying a weapon on school grounds in Columbus Junction Wednesday evening. Rung Ceu Bik, of Columbus Junction, was taken into custody after the Louisa County Sheriff?s Office received a 911 call stating there was a man with a rifle on the school grounds. Police later identified the weapon as a Crossman Storm air rifle. An air rifle fires a projectile by means of compressed air rather than by burning a propellant like a firearm does.
According to a press release from the Columbus Junction Police Department, Bik told police he was chasing rabbits. The press release stated that no threats were made to anyone at the school or associated with the school.
Police Chief Donnie Orr remarked that there were students outside the school at the time of the 911 call, at approximately 5:30 p.m., but that none of them were in close proximity to Bik. He said there is no evidence suggesting that Bik had any intention of harming anyone at the school.
