Van Buren hospital receives grant
WASHINGTON ? Congressman Dave Loebsack today announced the Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua has received a $107,493 grant from the USDA?s Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grant Program.
The funding will be used to purchase and install a picture archiving communications system that will allow radiological images from Van Buren to be sent electronically to radiologists at Ottumwa Regional Health Center in Ottumwa.
?Residents of rural communities, such as Van Buren, deserve to have access to the same medical care as someone living in a larger community,? said Loebsack. ?I am pleased the Van Buren County Hospital is receiving this competitive funding.?
Currently, radiologists are only on-site an hour each day at the Van Buren County Hospital. After the system is installed, medical staff at Van Buren will be able to send radiological images offsite to Ottumwa radiologists for immediate interpretation.
If additional diagnostic expertise is needed for complex medical cases, the new PACS will make it possible for Van Buren Hospital to forward patient images to institutions with more specialized expertise, such as the Mayo Clinic or university hospitals.
