A man has been convicted of burglary, assault and intent to commit sexual abuse for an incident that occurred at a rural Kalona home last fall. Dallas Jay Miller, 23, of Aplington, was convicted by jury of those crimes at the Johnson County Courthouse Thursday. Miller will be sentenced on June 18 at 11 a.m.
Miller was accused of breaking into a home in the 2200 block of 500
th
Street about five miles north of Kalona in Johnson County. The incident took place on the morning of Sept. 8, 2011. According to complaints filed with the Johnson County Sheriff?s Office later that morning, Miller was armed with a rifle, roll of tape and a camera when he entered the residence. The rifle was left outside the female victim?s bedroom and the tape and camera were left inside the bedroom.
One of the complaints indicated that a female resident of the home woke up when an intruder placed his hands on her face. The victim screamed, which awoke other family members who then came to investigate. The intruder fled through an open window in the bedroom. The residents called 911 and deputies were at the scene within five minutes. A responding deputy observed the suspect?s pickup parked about 100 feet from the house.
A second complaint filed with the sheriff?s office indicated that the intruder broke the doorknob off the victim?s bedroom door, prohibiting anyone from being able to enter the room. After the victim screamed and the intruder fled, the victim was able to let other family members into the bedroom since they were unable to open the door from the other side.
Miller was ordered not to have any contact with the victim at his hearing for initial appearance Sept. 9, 2011. He appeared in court that day without counsel and was assigned a public defender.
