Mary Hoyer will give a presentation: James Van Allen, An Unassuming Giant, as part of the SCC continuing education program. The talk will be held Tuesday evening, June 9, at the Mt. Pleasant SCC Center, Room 201, from 7-8 pm.
Dr. Van Allen, an Iowa Wesleyan graduate, and discoverer of the Van Allen radiation belts, is probably Mt. Pleasant?s most famous native son ? although probably better known internationally than at home.
The goal of the class is to help people understand more about the significance of the Van Allen belts as well as the other remarkable contributions he made, ranging from his work in the WWII Pacific Theater to the founding of NASA and eventually the Voyager and Galileo space missions. Find out why this quintessential Iowa boy is held in high esteem by the scientific community and how his work changed our understanding of earth and our solar system.
Hoyer has a degree in chemistry, attended graduate school in biophysics, and has long had an interest in STEM and understanding more about the dynamic nature of our world.
There is a fee for the class. Call (319) 208-5375 to register.
