Arrests
A caller Wednesday afternoon at East Washington Street in Washington reported a shoplifter in the store. An officer responded. Chase Robert Barkema, 18, of Washington, was arrested on a charge of fifth-degree theft.
A caller early Thursday morning at C Avenue in Kalona reported that his wife punched him in the face multiple times. The caller declined needing medical attention, and requested to speak with a deputy. Two officers responded. Hannah Jane Lybarger, 21, of Kalona, was arrested on a charge of domestic abuse assault causing bodily injury.
Traffic accident
A caller Wednesday evening at East Adams Street in Washington reported a two-vehicle property-damage-only accident. An officer responded. Vehicle operators were David Miller, of Washington, and Murray Kueneman, of Washington. Information was exchanged, and a state report will be filed.
Traffic stop serious
An officer reported stopping a vehicle at Palm Street in Riverside, Wednesday night. Charges are pending per DCI Lab results on two juveniles for possession of controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. One subject will also be cited for possession of tobacco under the legal age. The juveniles were released to their parents.
Traffic other
An officer reported chalking the tires on a vehicle on Highland Avenue after receiving a parking complaint, Wednesday morning at North Highland Avenue in Washington. The report was for documentation purposes. He planned to check back.
A caller Wednesday morning at South Iowa Avenue in Washington reported a vehicle that had not been moved for several weeks in the parking lot. An officer made contact with the owner, who was going to have the vehicle moved that evening after work.
Disabled vehicles
An officer reported being out with a trailer with lots of metal on it, and both tires were flat, Wednesday morning at Elm Avenue and 250th Street in Keota. The trailer seemed to be abandoned. The officer attempted to make contact with the owner. County Roads had made arrangements to have the trailer removed from the roadway if it was not moved by noon on May 23.
A deputy reported checking on two vehicles pulled over on Highway 1 and 190th Street in Washington. Two officers responded. Moore's was going to remove the disabled vehicle later that night.
A deputy reported being out with a disabled vehicle, Wednesday night at Highway 22 in Riverside. The subject pulled over to take a phone call. Everything was fine.
Fire calls
A caller Wednesday afternoon at South 11th Avenue in Washington reported a fire inside their oven. The fire was out, but the house was filling with smoke. Washington Fire Department responded and assisted.
Jefferson County requested assistance for a vehicle that was on fire, early Thursday morning at Quince Avenue in Brighton. Brighton Fire responded and assisted Jefferson County.
Animal complaint
A caller Wednesday night at 250th Street in Keota reported a dead deer in the middle of the road on 250th Street, just over the hill. The deer was removed from the roadway.
Barking dog
A caller Wednesday night at Ninth Avenue in Wellman reported that the neighbor's dog had been barking for the past three hours. It belonged to occupants in a two-story gray house. The caller called back to advise that the dog owner took the dog inside, but she would still like a deputy to speak with them. An officer responded. Dogs were barking at two residences on Ninth Avenue. The officer spoke with the dog owners, who were made aware of the complaint and counseled.
Disorderly conduct
A caller Wednesday afternoon at West Madison Street in Washington reported that a female subject was outside the business yelling and screaming. Customers were afraid to come into the business. An officer responded. The subject finished their meal and moved on.
Drug/narcotics violation
A caller Wednesday afternoon at Lexington Boulevard in Washington reported suspicious activity. A report will be filed.
Intimidation/harassment
A caller Wednesday night at East Main Street in Washington reported that she and her husband were receiving threats from the son's ex-girlfriend and her friends. She still had belongings at the residence also. The caller requested to speak with an officer. An officer spoke with the subject. She was advised to call in for a civil standby next week to retrieve her belongings.
Runaways/missing person
A caller Wednesday evening at East Madison Street in Brighton reported that a 7-year-old was missing from the residence. He was wearing a gray T-shirt with a character on the front, black pants with neon green stripes, and black shoes. An officer, Brighton Fire Department and Brighton QRS responded. Brighton Fire Department advised that the child was located.
Suspicious activity
A caller Wednesday night at Highway 92 in Washington reported that they escorted a subject out, and then he was hugging and bothering customers in the parking lot. The caller requested an officer. An officer spoke with the subject, and he was served a no-trespass order and would be no longer allowed on the property.
A caller Wednesday night at Foster Woods Road in Wellman reported hearing someone screaming in pain outside their residence. An officer responded and disregarded an additional officer. It was a chicken with a bad breathing problem, in their flower bed.
Trespass
A caller Wednesday night at West Third Street and North Avenue F in Washington reported that there were juveniles on the railroad trestle on West Third by Hayes Timber, and requested an officer. An officer checked the area and was unable to locate the juveniles.
All other theft
A caller Wednesday morning at East Madison Street in Washington reported a gas drive-off of $60. They left southbound on Iowa. They did try to pay at the pump, and it didn't work. An officer was advised. Dispatch made contact with the subject, and they would return and pay.
All other offenses
A caller Wednesday morning at South Avenue B in Washington reported a possible fight in one of the classrooms in the east wing. Two officers responded. Juvenile females were in the office area upon the officers' arrival. The incident was verbal only and would be handled within the school.
