FAIRFIELD – Friends of the late Roger McHone have organized a memorial walk/run in his honor for this Saturday, Nov. 1 beginning at Maasdam Barns in Fairfield and continuing on the Fairfield Loop Trail.
The event has no entry fee or prizes, but in addition to being an opportunity to remember a great Trojan coach and teacher, it will also be an opportunity to raise money for the Fairfield Cross-Country program.
One of the organizers of the event, Ron Hunerdosse, said he’ll be at Maasdam Barns at 7:30 a.m. that day to begin his walk, and intends to do the full 16 miles of the loop trail. Another organizer, Kirk Keller, will start his run on the trail at 9 a.m. The public is invited come whenever they wish and walk or run as much of the trail as they can.
McHone passed away in April of this year. Roger and his wife Diane moved to Fairfield in 1972, where Roger began teaching history at Fairfield High School and coaching boys’ cross-country, wrestling, and boys’ track. He continued coaching until 2007, and retired from teaching in 2009, when he also retired from the 34th Army Band that he joined after moving to Fairfield.
Keller, who now lives in Montana, was planning a trip back through the area, and wanted to check out his old stomping grounds in Fairfield where he grew up and had McHone as a cross-country coach. He reached out to Hunerdosse to ask if he’d be interested in holding a memorial walk/run in McHone’s honor. Hunerdosse, who was the girls’ cross country coach for decades and who knew McHone well, took the ball and ran with it.
