Mid-Prairie graduation brings hugs, hard goodbyes

WELLMAN — Mid-Prairie’s class of 2022 graduated Sunday afternoon, in a ceremony celebrating the accomplishments of around 90 outgoing seniors.
“With COVID and the polar vortex, it seems like we’ve been out of high school more often than not,” Valedictorian Lilou Beachy said. “But I would like to commend us on our persistence to have a normal senior year after everything we’ve been through … if you forget everything that I’ve said up here today, than at least remember to never stop persevering toward your success.”
The occasion marked the end of a public education career not only for the graduates, but for outgoing Superintendent Mark Schneider, who announced his retirement earlier this year.
“Graduates, this year, more than any other, I can identify with some of what you are feeling,” he said. “Part of you is excited about the new opportunities in front of you. Part of you might be anxious and maybe even a little scared about future challenges. And part of you may be feeling some sadness, because you are leaving a great school, a wonderful environment, and daily interactions with friends who have been there with you over the years.”
Schneider read a book to the graduating class — as he has for them and every kindergarten classroom at their first years in the district — before making his final remarks.
“It has been my pleasure and honor to serve you and the Mid-Prairie Community for the last 21 years as your superintendent,” he said. “With the graduates’ indulgence, I want to thank the community for all your support, patience, understanding and kindness. I have been truly blessed. I want to wish each of the graduates, and the Mid-Prairie School District much success and good luck in the years ahead.”
