WELLMAN — Students and family’s flocked to Wellman’s Main Street Wednesday night for a homecoming parade, the first of its kind for the high school.
The affair took floats, marching band members and athletes all the way up Main Street to the Y building, before returning to the high school for kickball, powder puff and coronation of homecoming king and queen.
Principal Chuck Banks said the school hoped to make the parade a tradition moving forward.
“We had some community members and parents who thought it would be a great idea to make the week a little more exciting for the kids,” he said. “They came to us three or four weeks ago and we started planning, and here we are … we’ve never done it before, but I think kids are excited and hopefully, each year we do it, it’ll build and build.”
Community members said the excitement rubbed off on them as well. Mid-Prairie sports announcer Chris Hotchkiss said he was hyped up as the first floats got rolling.
“I’ve been praying for this day,” he said. “I can’t believe it, I’m way freaked out, and way excited. This is year one, it’ll get even better year two, and even better year three.”
