The garage at 404 W. Briggs Ave. is a total loss after a midnight fire Saturday.
Although the fire did melt some of the vinyl siding on the home, the Fairfield Fire Department was able to contain the blaze before it could spread to the home or two nearby garages. Assistant fire chief Jeff Six estimated the loss of the garage and its few contents, including a car, a couple old couches and a roll of carpet, at less than $5,000.
The fire department was called to the scene shortly after 12 a.m. and arrived to find the garage fully involved. Six said the wood in the 100-year-old structure was dry, and without a ceiling, there was nothing to prevent the fire from quickly spreading to the rafters.
?Anytime it?s just a shell, they go up pretty fast,? Six said.
