WASHINGTON - Washington For Justice is planning to hold a tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. at the Washington Public Library on the civil rights activist’s birthday and federal holiday Monday, Jan. 15.
The program includes a welcome address and reading of “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” by Dan Henderson, a rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” sung by Cailee Wenger and Will Hart, and a tribute by Washington United Methodist Church Pastor Anthony DeVaughn.
A flyer for the event said it was important to celebrate King’s legacy.
“Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist minister, activist, and political philosopher who was one of the most prominent leaders in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968,” a flyer for the event said. “Today we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and recognize his role in promoting the American values of equality, justice and dignity for every citizen and human being.”
The program will run from 4-5 p.m. Jan. 15.
