KALONA — Three people frim died Monday morning in a head-on crash south of Kalona after a driver crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic to pass a snowplow, according to the Iowa State Patrol.
The crash happened just before 9 a.m. Monday in the 1700 block of Highway 1, south of Kalona. John McAndrew, 70, of Fairfield, was driving south on the highway in a 2002 Buick Park Avenue when he crossed into the northbound lane to pass a snowplow, according to a crash report from the state patrol.
He crashed into a 2013 Nissan Rouge being driven by Charles Person, 54, of Fairfield. Both drivers and a passenger in the Nissan — Amanda Person, 41, of Fairfield — died in the crash.
Another passenger — Victor Person, 17, of Fairfield — was injured in the crash and taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The crash report does not indicate how severe the injuries were.
The Iowa State Patrol did not reply to a request for more information on the crash submitted Tuesday morning, but did release the names and ages of those involved Wednesday in an updated preliminary accident report.
Monday’s crash was one of several major accidents in Washington County in the last few days. A 21-year-old woman died east of Brighton in a rollover accident Nov. 30, according to the Iowa State Patrol. And county emergency communication records show a collision with a deer near Riverside on Tuesday hospitalized a driver from Burlington, although a state patrol report with more details on that incident is pending.
The Southeast Iowa Union’s Kalen McCain also contributed to this report.
