Construction crews will be working in the intersection of Main Street and Monroe Street in Mt. Pleasant beginning Tuesday, Jan. 22, closing Monroe Street to traffic traveling between Main Street and Jefferson Street.
Hagerty Earthworks will begin working on point repairs and manhole replacements on the north side of the square on Tuesday to prepare for summer road construction.
The manhole replacement construction is a part of a wider city construction project on sewer lines.
'This has been an ongoing problem since the 1970s,” said Bob Troutman with Warner Engineering Associates, Inc. 'They finally have got a grant to help pay for replacing the sewers that are bad.”
Troutman said that they are beginning construction on the manhole replacements before the water department replaces water mains ahead of repaving Main Street this summer.
Traffic will not be able to travel north on Main Street. They will be able to turn east on Monroe Street. The section of Main Street from Monroe Street to Madison Street will not be open to thru traffic until crews have cleared the intersection to the west of Main Street.
Work on the north side of the square will take approximately two weeks as construction crews move west. They will be first replacing a manhole and approximately 50 feet of pipe to the west. This work will take approximately one week, weather permitting.
Parking will be blocked off for equipment and materials along the north side of the square.
Detour signs will be placed Tuesday morning by the city of Mt. Pleasant before construction starts.
Troutman said heavy snows could very well hinder the start of construction Tuesday. If that happens, construction will be scheduled for a later date.
