Two members of the Mount Sterling City Council passed a resolution of discontinuance Wednesday evening.
A third councilwoman was absent.
The passing of the resolution starts a 30-day window in which any resident may file a petition with the council calling for a special election on the matter.
In the meantime, the city will conduct business as usual. At the end of the 30 days, if no petition is brought forward, the Iowa Community Development Board will take control of the city treasury for a period of six months to settle any outstanding financial obligations, and Van Buren County will take over governance.
Outside of the mayor and city council, no residents of Mount Sterling were in attendance at the meeting.
