Former Mt. Pleasant Mayor Stan Hill will be honored at halftime of tonight?s high school football game between Mt. Pleasant and Washington.
Last summer, Staats of Mt. Pleasant hosted a county fair-themed event for its employees and families in which those attending could participate in various competitive events.
In one of those events, employees competed in a Quilt Block Challenge. Following the event, the quilt block entries were put together and made into a patriotic-themed quilt by Staats employee Carol Rose.
Staats employees decided to donate the quilt to a local veteran in recognition of their service to our country. In cooperation with the Henry County Veterans Affairs office, Staats selected Hill as this year?s recipient.
Hill enlisted in the United States Army in 1950 at the age of 20. He served four years of active duty in the Army and 34 years of active duty in the United States Army Reserve, retiring with the rank of major.
His active-duty tours included 27 jumps as a United States Army airborne paratrooper.
As a veteran, Hill has been a member of the Henry County Veterans Honor Guard as well as the American Legion for 60 years. He is a lifetime member of the United States Military Officers Association of America.
Locally, he was an original member of the group that formed the Avenue of Flags in Mt. Pleasant and an original member of the group which initiated and implemented the Henry County Veterans Memorial on the Henry County Courthouse lawn.
Throughout his life, he has been actively involved in Veterans Affairs and is currently spearheading a project to build a military memorial to be placed in the park at Trenton.
