Mt. Pleasant Fire Department looking for new recruits

The Mt. Pleasant Fire Department is looking for more volunteers to fill up their roster.
Mt. Pleasant Fire Chief Drew Schumacher said discussions regarding the search for more volunteers began about a month ago, and word-of-mouth has been the method used so far to recruit potential volunteers.
Currently, there are 25 volunteers who dedicate time to the fire department.
'I'd like to fill up my roster to about 35 volunteers,” Schumacher said.
Since the firefighters are volunteer, he said, the time volunteers are able to respond to calls varies since everyone has different work schedules and other responsibilities.
There's currently a shortage of volunteers who are more readily available during the day, Schumacher said, and he hopes to fill that need with new volunteers.
Members of the Fire Department meet every Wednesday at 7 p.m., and Schumacher said anyone is available to come to a meeting to check things out and pick up an application should they wish to volunteer.
According to the Mt. Pleasant Fire Department's page on the City of Mt. Pleasant website, the department goes on about 150 calls per year.
The most frequent calls the department answers are alarm calls and vehicle accident calls, Schumacher said. They do also answer a number of calls regarding structure or field fires.
