MT. PLEASANT - The Mt. Pleasant Fire Department responded to a small fire at the Mt. Pleasant Civic Center on Wednesday morning. The Civic Center houses city hall, the public library and the Heatilator Performing Arts Center.
City Administrator Brent Schleisman said he noticed a burning smell when he entered his office at around 7 a.m. and was able to locate flames in the building's broiler room at around 7:15 a.m. Schleisman, who had contacted the fire department after he noticed the burning smell, was able to empty a fire extinguisher on the flames. When firefighters arrived, they also doused the area to make sure the fire was completely put out.
'It wasn't a real big one. We caught it when it was just starting,” Schleisman said.
Though the department searched for how the fire began, Schleisman said it was 'an undetermined cause.”
