MT. PLEASANT — The Mt. Pleasant Public Library has opened its summer reading program for in-person reading for the first time in over a year. With this year’s theme “Reading Colors Your World,” they are bringing joy and bright smiles to the public library this summer.
The public library and their children's department are bringing in lots of summer readers eager to feast their eyes on colorful stories and lay their hands on colorful crafts this summer.
All age levels from infants to teens are invited to join in the summer reading and activity program. According to Children’s Librarian Amy Willson, the program is there to help bridge the gap in reading from spring to fall.
“It’s important because in the summer they don’t have school, so there’s a gap from the summer to fall, and so it keeps them reading and keeping their reading levels up,” Willson said. “We read to them and talk about books. Some of them are elective readers and aren’t as interested, so it’s also here to get them reading more and more interested in books.”
Among themed craft and story days there are other activities in the library that kids can participate in including a miniature grocery store, puzzles, mazes and more.
They have themed days as well for kids to come to: Monday is STEM day where they learn about science, Tuesday is teens chat and craft day, Wednesday is elementary day, Thursday is toddler day, and Friday is individual outdoor activities.
They have different times each day so everyone can enjoy summer reading. Monday’s, Wednesday’s, and Thursday’s are at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. Wednesday’s also have a 6 p.m. option. Tuesday’s teen chat is at 11 a.m.
To join the summer reading program you can just walk-in to the library and go to the children’s desk to register anytime.
