WASHINGTON — Heath Krabill, 44, of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, has been sentenced to prison for up to 10 years after being convicted in two different criminal cases.
On the afternoon of Sept. 1, 2020, Krabill was driving on Highway 78 in rural Washington County when he struck another car, according to a news release from the Washington County Attorney’s Office.
“The 74-year-old woman driving the other car suffered serious injuries,” the news release said. “Krabill later assaulted an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) that arrived on scene to provide aid. Deputies with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office obtained a search warrant to get a sample of Krabill’s blood, which revealed Krabill had opiates, amphetamines and benzodiazepines in his system.”
Krabill was charged with Serious Injury by Vehicle, a Class D felony, and Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, a Serious Misdemeanor.”
On Feb. 6, 2022, while his other charges were pending, Krabill was found with drugs and was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, Third or Subsequent Offense, a Class D felony, according to the same news release.
At sentencing on Nov. 4, 2022, the Defendant was sentenced to prison for up to 5 years for causing Serious Injury by Vehicle and up to 5 years on Possession of a Controlled Substance, Third or Subsequent Offense. These sentences will run consecutively, meaning when one is complete, he will begin serving the next sentence. Krabill was also sentenced to up to 1 year of prison on Assaulting the EMT, but the attorney’s office said that sentence would run at the same time as the other two offenses.
According to the Board of Parole’s 2021 report on sentencing, the average time served for Serious Injury by Vehicle is 17.9 months out of a maximum of 60 months, and the average time served for Possession of a Controlled Substance, Third or Subsequent Offense, is 13.9 months out of a maximum of 60 months.
