The Mt. Pleasant Police Department is no stranger for reports of scams. For the department, it is a regular occurrence that does not seem to be going away any time soon.
“Every day, we get two to three calls about scams, ” Police Chief Lyle Murray said. “Usually it’s repeats, and there’s just so many people trying to take advantage of the vulnerable.”
Murray says that older people are typically the highest demographic for scams, though they are not the only ones.
“I’m on the do-not-call list, and I still get three to 10 phone calls on my cell from scammers,” he said. “If you don’t know the number, it’s best not to answer it and have them leave a message.”
In addition to not answering the phone for unknown numbers, Murray advised people to not give out personal information, such as your date of birth or Social Security number and to not send money.
“If they’re asking for a gift card or a prepaid credit card, don’t send it,” he said. “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
“If people have questions about a scam, please feel free to call your local law enforcement,” Murray said. “We deal with them on a daily basis, so we’ve seen and heard them all.”
