The city of Mt. Pleasant will hold its annual spring cleanup during the week of April 26 to April 29. This week will allow city residents to get rid of things that are too big to fit into garbage bags for regular pickup.
'We do this once a year to help out the residents,” Public Works Director Rick Mullin said. 'It does cost the city money to do this spring cleanup, but it's a way to try to keep the city nice and clean.”
Mt. Pleasant residents are encouraged to use this cleanup week to get rid of allowed waste, as the cleanup is only offered once a year. If residents miss it, they will be required to contact a private contractor for any waste that doesn't fit into garbage bags for regular pick up.
Residents are allowed a pile size of approximately 6 feet wide, 8 feet long, and 4 feet tall, excluding a separate metal pile. A minimum of six stickers are required for the pile, and it is recommended that the stickers be placed no earlier than the morning of pickup to prevent scavenging.
The spring cleanup will not collect the following:
' Tires, waste oil, batteries, roof shingles and ash.
' Liquids, such as antifreeze, household chemicals and wet paint.
' Construction materials of any kind such as drywall and wood.
' Televisions and computer monitors.
' Yard waste.
' Appliances.
The cleanup will accept paint cans if the lid is off and the paint is dry. They will accept carpet if it is rolled tightly and tied.
WEMIGA Waste will do the collection work, and the cleanup will take place on the normal garbage day. For more information or questions regarding the spring cleanup, contact Public Works at 319-385-1480 Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
