The city of Mt. Pleasant is hoping to snag some big money for a major street project.
At Tuesday's meeting, the City Council unanimously authorized applying for a $1.3 million grant to help pay for the complete overhaul of East and West Winfield avenues.
'We're looking to do a complete rebuild,” City Administrator Brent Schleisman said. 'It would be a new street, with new storm sewers and new water.
'Some of that street is on its last legs.”
The planned project will run from Grand Avenue to Broadway Street and is estimated to cost about $2.6 million.
Schleisman said that the city plans to use local-option sales tax funds to help pay for the project.
'Part of that road is in the county,” he added. 'The county agreed to pay for a portion of the cost if we get the grant.”
The grant the city is seeking is a federal State Transportation Improvement Program grant.
STIP grants help fund multiyear transportation projects around the country.
Schleisman said that the city should know in spring 2021 if they will receive the grant.
'If we get the grant, we would be able to start work after October 2024,” Schleisman.
The city of Mt. Pleasant applied unsuccessfully for the grant in each of the past three years.
