MT. PLEASANT — Thanks to funding from a grant, the Mt. Pleasant Community School District has been able to put on a new type of summer school this year that goes beyond traditional remediation.
Funded by grant funds, the program provided enrichment and fun at the summer school program this year including funding a Maker Space at the high school and providing elementary and secondary students with non traditional learning opportunities in the classroom this summer.
“Our goal was to keep kids connected, inspired, part of the school system, and to be with an adult that cares about them,” said Curriculum Director Katie Gavin at a school board meeting Monday night.
Many of the board members said the program seems like a success with 52 credits earned by high school students during the program. Whether it was extra credits, making up classes, or other ventures the program was deemed a success by school board President Jennifer Crull.
“It has been a very positive thing, and I think that’s important for our district to continue that focus,” Crull said.
Gavin explained that the program had more of a summer camp feel to it this year.
“A little more of a camp feel with not such a focused target but still making sure that it’s academic,” Gavin said.
Elementary has two weeks left.
In other action, the board approved vacation days for faculty at the district that aren’t included in the teacher union contract.
