MT. PLEASANT — The Mt. Pleasant City Council Ordinance committee decided not to move forward with changes to the fireworks ordinance after complaints from residents and council member Bob Griffith.
With only 31 calls for service related to fireworks over the past year, according to Police Chief Lyle Murray, the ordinance seems to be working.
Coming down from 65 or 90 calls in previous years, the ordinance seems a definite improvement to the board members.
Most of the calls came over the Fourth of July weekend and many were just about reminding residents of the ordinance, according to Murray.
“It would be 10:30 and people would still be lighting them off, and we’d go over and tell them to stop and explain the ordinance and people listened. There were no repeat offenders,” Murray said.
In fact most of the calls resulted in warnings, no citations were given by police.
With cooperation of residents and fireworks tents, according to Murray, this year went smoothly.
