It ended up being a $30,000 Christmas present when Juanita Savely received a lottery ticket from her daughter that hit the jackpot.
Giving each other lottery tickets had become a tradition for Savely and her family. This Christmas, as the family was sitting around scratching the coating off their tickets, Savely was looking at a Merry Multiplier and asked for clarification from her daughter Kim Hinkle, the one who gave the ticket.
'If I match this number and this number it is a winner?” Savely asked.
Hinkle replied that was correct. Although she couldn't quite believe it at the time, Savely announced she had won $30,000.
Savely remembers her grandchildren were more excited than she was at the prospect of having a winning lottery ticket. It wasn't until she took the ticket to a store to check for winners that it became clear the ticket ws a winner.
Savely and Hinkle picked a day to go to the lottery office in Cedar Rapids to pick up the winnings. Savely commented it was much easier than she thought it would be. She walked in and handed the lottery officials her ticket. They took her picture and gave her a T-shirt and her check.
'I need a roof on my house,” Savely said. 'That is what this is going for.”
Savely smiled when she said there isn't an agreement among family members for a winner to share the winnings with the person who gave the ticket to them.
