State report lists cause of death as drowning
LOWELL (GTNS) ? An investigation into the death of Howard James Snider, 51, Nevada, Iowa, has labeled the cause of death as drowning.
Snider?s body was recovered from Lake Geode at 6:08 p.m. Sunday.
According to a press release, Snider was at Lake Geode with family and had been on a fishing boat. The boat pulled to a dock and occupants exited the boat. Snider?s daughter remained in the boat and due to high winds, the boat floated away from the dock. Snider?s daughter was unable to get the boat started by herself, so Snider entered the water to swim to the boat to retrieve it and his daughter. During the time he was in the water, he was unable to continue swimming and went under water.
Snider?s body was sent to the State Medical Examiner?s Office in Ankeny. The preliminary report from the medical examiner revealed the cause of death was drowning.
Snider was a member of the police department in Ames. He joined the department in June 1989 and was promoted to sergeant in 2002. His most recent assignment was supervising the department?s Safe Neighborhoods team.
Henry County Sheriff?s Office was assisted at the scene at Lake Geode by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the Iowa State Patrol, Des Moines County Sheriff?s Office, New London Fire and Rescue and Henry County EMS.
