RIGHT: The latest improvement at the Carnegie Historical Museum is the restoration of the bathroom, complete with stenciling, antique lighting and marble antique sink. The marble backsplash and sink hookup still remain to be completed as well as cladding the outside of the area with unused paneling from the recent Jefferson County Courthouse courtroom remodel.
Museum director Mark Shafer emulated the stenciled pattern seen in an 1890s library photo to make the design.
ABOVE: Artist Christopher Wimmer works on stenciling near the ceiling. The stenciling, repeated just above the marble baseboard, was done with the combined efforts of Wimmer, who primarily did the prep work sponging a textured base, and Rachel Gevock and Mary Dickins, who did most of the stenciling.
Shafer is looking for a vintage wastebasket, similar to the wire mesh style formerly used in offices, to complete the look. A framed reproduction photograph of the library?s reading room, which shows the original stencil work, will hang in the completed bathroom.
For these photos, see the Monday, Nov. 8, 2010, printed edition of The Fairfield Ledger.
