New 641 area code takes effect Sunday
Several areas of Iowa currently served by the 515 area code will get a new area code - 641 - Sunday. The change affects Fairfield.
Des Moines, Ames, Fort Dodge, Algona and surrounding areas will retain the 515 area code as the result of the decision made earlier by the Iowa Utilities Board, the regulatory agency the makes decisions on area code changes in Iowa.
After Sunday, callers will have a five-month transition

Des Moines, Ames, Fort Dodge, Algona and surrounding areas will retain the 515 area code as the result of the decision made earlier by the Iowa Utilities Board, the regulatory agency the makes decisions on area code changes in Iowa.
After Sunday, callers will have a five-month transition before use of the area code becomes mandatory on Dec. 3. During that time, callers may use the new or old area code to complete a call in the 641 area.
