The New London Holiday Stroll Committee held a Zombie Run Saturday evening, allowing runners to journey around New London.
Besides the runners and walkers, community members were also asked to dress up as zombies and scare the runners during the event. Five people dressed as zombies and scared the 10 runners who participated in the event.
For the past six years, the Holiday Stroll Committee has held a monster mash run. This year they decided to mix up the theme. Holiday Stroll member and organizer Chelsea Boecker said they wanted to try something different.
“This year, we decided to change the run and try the Zombie Run,” Boecker said. “I really wanted to get creative and bring something different to our town.”
Shanon Wellington is the one who originally started the race event in 2013.
Boecker said the event’s purpose is to bring a healthy activity to town, but it’s also a fundraiser for the Holiday Stroll in December.
“The importance of the event is to have fun and bring healthy activity to our town,” Boecker said. “We also are trying to raise funds for the Holiday Stroll night, which takes place in December.”
Several businesses sponsored the event, allowing participants to get prizes for running.
Casey’s, Walmart, and Jet Stop all donated gift cards for the participants. The New London Fire and Police Department also assisted with keeping the runner safe during the event.
