NEW LONDON — Thirty people attended the New London Memorial Day service Monday at the VFW Post after rain forced a change of venue from the outdoor veterans memorial.
Air Force veteran Dave McGregor led the service, telling the history of Memorial Day from its beginnings honoring the Civil War dead.
“Today we are here to give a lasting tribute of respect to those comrades and men and women who have fallen,“ McGregor said. ”Their wants and needs were set aside for the cause of a greater good.“
He noted that the war against terrorism is ongoing and military personnel are still dying in foreign countries.
The Ladies Auxiliary presented a wreath that was placed alongside McGregor on the platform at the front of the room.
David Brown, Ron Rink, Denny Linder and Rex Dovenspike folded an American flag while McGregor explained the meaning behind each of the 13 folds in the flag.
A three-shot volley was fired the back door of the post, followed by the playing of “Taps.”
