New salon, Beauty with Grace, now open in Washington Mother daughter duo Kristin and Kylen Anderson go into hair business together

WASHINGTON - Deciding to open a small business is a big decision but for Kristin Anderson and her daughter Kylen Anderson, co-owners of new salon Beauty with Grace, it was the perfect decision.

The new shop is located at 108 North Marion Avenue and will offer hair, make up, nail and waxing treatments.

Kristin has been cutting hair for 28 years, she said, and recently began planning long-term for the future. Retirement is a decade or two down the road for her, but now that her daughter has graduated from hair school, it felt like the perfect time to open a business together.

'I just found it as a really good opportunity to be able to step aside and into our own little space to work side-by-side with her and teach her so that she can eventually take over for me,” she said.

Kylen, a recent graduate of hair school, originally went to school for nursing before changing her mind. Looking to the future and to starting fresh in a new salon beside her mother, she said she is most excited for the chance at trying new things from the comfort of her own salon.

'I like learning new things and I like that our job is different everyday. Nothing is ever the same because no one ever wants the same thing so you always have to keep up with the new trends and learn things as you go,” she said.

Kylen said keeping up with trends is something she finds a little tricky but Kristin said by looking at different pages on Instagram and taking classes, she is able to keep up with trends fairly well. A former hair teacher, Kristin said she is looking forward to working with her daughter and showing her some of the tricks of the trade.

'Obviously this isn't a school situation but I am enjoying being back in a teaching role with my daughter and teaching her how I want her to learn to do hair,” she said.

Kristin said she has rented a chair for most of her career so with that experience under her belt, opening her own salon is not a big deal. Kylen, however, is nervous yet excited for the new adventure.

One thing she is not nervous about is the opportunity to work beside her mom. Because they have a basis of love and understanding, she has no fears it will be anything but smooth sailing here on out.

'I feel like in getting our own salon we've done good so far because we have to so we can work together to make sure everything goes well,” she said.
