WASHINGTON — Washington residents have started paying a little more for water and sewer services after an ordinance change was approved in recent city council meetings. The new rates represent an increase of 9.5% for water and 5% on sewer usage, according to a memo sent to elected officials.
The change was discussed by council members during budget talks for the new fiscal year, but took effect on July 1.
“Our utility rates are reviewed during our budget discussions to ensure we have funds to fulfill our operating expenses, to fulfill needs for capital improvement projects and meet our debt obligations,” City Administrator Deanna McCusker said. “The water rate increase that was effective July 1, was necessary to meet all of our obligations for the water department.”
For residential customers, rates in the city now sit at $5.46 per 100 cubic feet, although the base charge of $19.55 per month is unchanged. The residential and non-residential sewer rates are up to $4.91 per 100 cubic feet of water used, with base rates also unchanged.
