The new year brought a fresh blanket of snow to Southeast Iowa.
According to the National Weather Service, a New Year’s Day winter storm dropped between four and six inches of light powder.
The snow began to fall in the morning hours and continued throughout the day.
Nearly two inches of snow had fallen in Oakland Mills by 10:30 a.m.
New London reported about four inches of snow at 5:20 p.m., while Washington reported six inches of snow around 5:40 p.m.
The snow began to taper off after dark, and temperatures dropped and the wind picked up, creating dangerous driving conditions.
Sunday was bright and sunny, but cold. Temperatures remained in single digits throughout the day, with subzero wind chills.
Several cities declared snow emergencies that were in effect throughout the weekend in order to facilitate snow removal from the streets.
