FAIRFIELD – Jefferson County Attorney Chauncey Moulding issued a news release Wednesday to explain why nobody was charged with a crime in relation to a stabbing incident that occurred in Fairfield on Nov. 30, 2023.
An anonymous caller informed the Jefferson County Law Center of an altercation in the 800 block of West Grimes Avenue at 4:47 p.m. that day, reporting that there were multiple people outside fighting, beating each other and using sticks and other objects.
Officers with the Fairfield Police Department and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office responded and discovered a group of people, including a male who had suffered an apparent stab wound. That man was transported via ambulance to the Jefferson County Health Center.
Moulding wrote in his news release Wednesday that, after conferring with the investigating officers, he did not find probable cause of a criminal act. He wrote that several factors contributed to this conclusion, such as inconclusive evidence about who started the altercation, whether it was done in self-defense, the victim’s unwillingness to cooperate with the prosecution, and conflicting reports from witnesses at the scene.
The news release indicated that the male was stabbed in the leg with a kitchen knife wielded by a female, though it did not give any further information about the identity of these two individuals. This stabbing occurred at the conclusion of a day of disagreements among family members that culminated in a physical struggle between numerous individuals.
“The female individual was interviewed by Fairfield Police officers, and indicated that the knife was used in self-defense, after the male party had thrown a part of a car engine at her. This claim of self-defense could not be verified by law enforcement,” the news release read.
The male stabbing victim was interviewed about the altercation. Moulding wrote that, though he was generally cooperative with the investigation, he declined to provide information implicating the female party in his injury, telling officers that “we don’t do family like that.” He informed officers that he did not wish to cooperate in the criminal prosecution relating to the injuries he suffered.
Moulding wrote that the stabbing victim is expected to make a full recovery.
