DES MOINES (AP) ? Officials say explosives will be used to quickly bring down the old nurses college building that sits next to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Des Moines television station KCCI says the implosion is scheduled for the morning of March 16.
The nurses college has been closed since 1999. The empty building sits just feet from the entrance of the hospital emergency room.
Iowa Methodist spokeswoman Amy Varcoe says the decision to implode was easy. She says managers concluded that hospital workers and patients could endure a few seconds of explosion and dust easier than they could tolerate months and months of noise from a wrecking ball.
