FAIRFIELD – O.B. Nelson Park in Fairfield is sporting a new shelter thanks to a generous local donor.
Over the summer, the City of Fairfield announced that resident Joe Mandarino wanted to make another donation to spruce up O.B. Nelson Park on the south side of town. Mandarino made a significant donation 11 years ago to create a skate park west of the ballfields, in the hopes of getting more kids to play outside. But in the ensuing decade, Mandarino felt that the skate park was not being used as much as he hoped, and spoke to Fairfield Mayor Connie Boyer about how to rectify the matter.
They agreed that the best use of a further donation should go toward a new shelter near the skate park, additional lighting, better signage and removing the unsightly graffiti. By September, the city was putting the finishing touches on the new shelter that measures 20 feet by 30 feet, complete with electrical outlets.
