OLDS ? Children and adults left the pews following the Feb. 15 worship service at the Olds United Church of Christ, rolled up their sleeves and helped ?Kids Against Hunger? fight a battle to help feed the world.
?It was a lot of fun, it seemed like everyone was enjoying it,? said the Rev. Elaine Vass, who pastors the congregation along with her husband, Carl. The Vasses have served the church since 2006.
She said she heard of Kids Against Hunger, which has an office and warehouse in Mt. Pleasant, from her daughter, Jenny. ?She lives in the St. Louis area and she told me that last year they collected money for Kids Against Hunger and packaged meals and it was a lot of fun.?
Vass said last summer?s Vacation Bible School (VBS) offering went to Kids Against Hunger and the church contracted for 2,000 meals.
The VBS offering didn?t come close to purchasing the meals so the church?s ?Willing Workers? group ponied up the balance.
Together, the VBS students and Willing Workers packaged the meals, which took just over an hour, according to Vass. She said about 20 adults and six children participated.
Vass said she doesn?t know where the meals are going but Don and Sandy Fields, who manage the Kids Against Hunger outlet in Mt. Pleasant, said they will let her know.
But that isn?t important to Vass. Rather, it was the effort demonstrated by youth and adults alike, working to make a better world for some worthy recipients.
