WASHINGTON — County officials say one person “suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen,” early in the morning on Wednesday, May 29, in an incident along Airport Road in Washington.
That person was transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics by a Washington County ambulance, and was in stable condition as of 11 a.m., according to a news release from Washington County.
The release did not identify the person injured, or explain any details of the event, other than confirming that the Washington County Communication Center “received a report of a disturbance at 2705 Airport Road,” around 12:45 a.m.
County Sheriff Jared Schneider did not immediately reply to an email Wednesday morning requesting further comments. County Deputy Shawn Ellingson said in an email that the one-paragraph news release was “all we are able to release at this time.” Washington Police Chief Jim Lester said his department assisted with the call, but had “no additional information to provide.”
The disturbance was not entered in the morning’s police Call For Service log released by the county, which did include other calls before and after 12:45 a.m. Wednesday. The Union has submitted a public record request for more details surrounding the incident.
The CFS log did, however, include a dispatch to the same address after a caller requested a welfare check, saying someone “was possibly assaulted” just before 9 p.m. Tuesday. That entry said an officer spoke with all parties involved, who were separated afterward without pressing any charges. It’s not clear whether that incident was related to the gunshot wound reported a few hours later.
Early morning commuters in the area, one of them a Union correspondent, said they saw police presence on Airport Road or moving toward it at around 1, 3, and 5:45 a.m. as they drove by.
The news release said the Washington County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by personnel from Washington EMS, the Washington Police Department, Washington County Conservation, and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
