One killed, one injured in crash on 218

WASHINGTON COUNTY — A driver was killed and passenger injured after a car vaulted a ditch and wrapped around a tree on Highway 218 Sunday morning, close to mile maker 73.

“(The car) was (southbound) on Highway 218, per witnesses at a high rate of speed,” a minimal crash report from the Iowa State Patrol said. “(The driver) lost control, entered west ditch, vaulted small creek, made contact with tree and came to rest.”

The accident killed driver Brenden Poole, of Ossian, and injured an unnamed female passenger, who was a minor.

A police log from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office listed Jones Eden Funeral Home among the responders on the scene, and said one person was transported by AirCare to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

The accident still is under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol, according to their report.
