One person dies in Fairfield fire

One person has died in a structure fire in Fairfield.

The identity of the person has not been released, but the Fairfield Fire Department shared in a news release last week that the individual died in a fire on Aug. 28.

On that day at 11:27 p.m., the Jefferson County Communications Center received a call about a fire at 51 S. 12th St., an apartment building. The call prompted a response from the Fairfield Fire Department, Fairfield Police Department, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Jefferson County Ambulance.

“Upon entry into the residence [Apartment No. 2], the remains of one deceased individual were unfortunately located inside,” stated the news release from the fire department. “The identity of this individual is being withheld pending notification of family.”

The remains were sent to the Iowa Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy to determine the cause of death. The fire department stated that an intentional fire is not suspected at this time.
