On Saturday, July 22, more than 70 people filled a classroom in the Henry County Heritage Center Museum to hear Joan Morgan of River Junction and Pat White of Mt. Pleasant, tell the history of the Orphan Train movement, which spanned several decades, from 1854 through the 1920s. During this time, tens of thousands of orphaned and abandoned children, primarily from New York City, were “placed out” to families throughout the United States, with nearly 7,000 children finding homes in Iowa. The women each shared personal stories of their grandfathers who were both Orphan Train riders. (Photo submitted)
