WAYLAND — Parkview Home in Wayland is celebrating their receipt of a five-star rating from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Tuesday, Nov. 7.
"The Five Star rating we earned is a team effort,” Community Director Ron Semler said. “It is a direct result of love and caring and an attitude that exists for the benefit of our residents and Community."
In 2023 Parkview Home’s rating increased from three stars to four and this year it increased once again.
Parkview Home is a nonprofit Community Owned, Continuing Care Retirement Community. The Community features Independent Living, Residential Living Units and a Skilled Nursing and Intermediate Care Center. Parkview Home has been operating in Wayland Iowa since 1961.
CMS uses a five-star rating system to measure the quality of health care facilities to help consumers, their families, and caregivers to compare nursing homes. According to CMS, “Nursing homes with 5 stars are considered to have much above average quality and nursing homes with 1 star are considered to have quality much below average. There is one Overall 5-star rating for each nursing home, and separate ratings for health inspections, staffing and quality measures.”
The ratings for nursing homes through CMS are based on three categories: health inspections, staffing, and quality measures. The medicare.gov comparison website appears to agree with Selmer’s sentiments that the staff efforts make the difference. While Parkview’s overall score is 5-stars, their highest individual category score is staffing.
The CMS report shows that not only Parkview nurses spend more time with residents, but registered nurses specifically spend approximately 20 minutes more per hour than the national average with residents. Additionally, Parkview Home has a nearly 10% lower turnover rate compared to national and state averages. This rate is even better for register nurses on staff at Parkview.
