The Pekin FFA chapter has had a productive and eventful year. From supervised agricultural experience opportunities to events and tours, we have grown and experienced so many new things!
A few highlights from the year include GOLD-rated teams at the State FFA convention in Poultry Judging and Farm Business Management. We also ended the livestock judging season with the 9th overall team in the state, with Lilian Buie receiving 9th overall individual.
Outside of the various competitions we have competed in, we have worked to complete a few different projects including a harvest meals project with Vision Ag this spring, a Feed the Farmer lunch this fall with J&S Precision Ag Plus, and hosting a Meals from the Heartland packaging event where we packaged 20,000 meals to be distributed to those in need.
We also harvested over 700 pumpkins from Bennett Ag Research Corp. to be distributed to elementary students here at Pekin around Halloween. We also helped work at Richland’s Trunk or Treat event this fall.
Six members had the opportunity to attend the National FFA Convention and Expo this year where they had the opportunity to visit the Caterpillar Headquarters, ADM Plant, and Beasley’s Orchard. It was a very eye-opening experience for all who participated.
Within the classroom, we got the whole greenhouse renovated thanks to generous donations from the Keokuk and Jefferson County Farm Bureaus. This renovation included new “skin” all around the greenhouse, a new heater, a new ventilation system, and a new monitoring system.
We are excited to begin growing our plants for the annual sale again! A few things coming up this semester include a farm safety day, FFA breakfast, greenhouse plant sales, and more contests! We appreciate all the support we continue to receive from our community!
